Sonic the Hedgehog game from 90′ now in cinemas as a movie

Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer was released just a few days ago and already has almost 19 million views and probably about the same amount of opinions about it too. Is it a movie for kids or is it a movie for nostalgic 90’s kids who played video games with the character Sonic the Hedgehog? These are the questions that no one is asking after watching this trailer. There is no time to discuss that while pointing out every single terrible and disappointing thing about this movie. People also are bashing Sonic the Hedgehog movie on twitter here are Top 10 funnest tweets about Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Some critics call it “a 200mph slap in the face”, and say that “the worst thing that’s happened to me since Sonic Labyrinth on the Saga Game Gear”.

Well, who am I kidding, you really have to arm yourself with patience if you want to find at least one good word about Sonic the Hedgehog movie. So, let’s dig into the trailer and the things we know about the movie so far.

Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer song

First the trailers song choice is Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio. To be fair Sonic the Hedgehog was at its peak in the 90’s and so was this song, by some it’s even considered as an anthem of the 90’s. But let’s face it how can you connect Gangsta’s Paradise with a very fast running blue Hedgehog? Not to mention that Gangsta’s Paradise is already soundtrack for the famous movie Dangerous Minds (1995) starring Michelle Pfeiffer. There are even discussions on twitter where people call out the film for ruining this song.

Sonic the Hedgehog movie cast

The character of Dr. Robotnik is played by the amazing actor, comedian Jim Carrey. And right of the bat people criticize this actor choice for the character because Jim Carrey apparently looks to young for this role and maybe even looks more like “Hercule Poirot crossed with Neo from The Matrix”.

Sonic the Hedgehog voice is recorded by Ben Schwartz and that is probably the fact that is the least complained about. Most people admit that Ben Schwartz did a good job here. Actually, when you think about it, he even kind of looks like Sonic. Ben Schwartz is thrilled to have this role and, in an interview, answering a question about which character he would like to live for the day, he says: “And I’m also a hedgehog, and I guess I love rings. So I’m very into that. It’d probably be Sonic. I can turn into a ball? What are you, crazy? I would love that.”

Other famous roles are played by James Marsden, Neal McDonough, Adam Pally, Tika Sumpter etc.

Sonic the Hedgehog movie plot

There is a sheriff and San Francisco Police Department officer called Tom Wachowski. Tom travels from Green Hills, Montana to San Francisco, to help Sonic (an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run incredibly fast) in evading capture by the government, defeating the insane scientist Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik and also collecting his rings. Any of this makes sense to you? Others describe the plot of this movie much shorter: “the ratty-looking hedgehog arrives on Earth, sends US government into a panic”.

Sonic the Hedgehog character

And one last thing that people find disturbing in this movie trailer is the looks of Sonic the Hedgehog character. Some say it looks like a rat, some can’t understand why a hedgehog has human teeth and nails, some are confused by blue hedgehog’s missing genitals.

All in all, say what you want but this movie has got everyone’s attention. But I leave you with one thought – When the movie was first announced by Sony, it’s executive producer was Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool and in charge of visual effects was award winning Jeff Fowler, but when Paramount Pictures took over, Sonic the Hedgehog became “by the team behind Fast and Furious”. So… maybe that explains a lot.
