Today in Japan the next huge entry in the Yakuza game series has been revealed and it looks like Sega is changing things up a bit. The new game is called Ryu ga Gotoku 7 but in the West it will most likely be called just Yakuza 7. The game has a brand-new character, a totally new combat system and a new setting.
Yakuza 7 was already teased with the title Shin Ryu ga Gotku (the “shin” means “new”). Protagonist Kazuma Kiryu’s story was carried to an end in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. And now the series will keep going with a new lead in the story called Ichiban Kasuga. This character is also a former yakuza and he took the fall for a crime that he did not commit. Also, a huge Dragon Quest fan.
The location where the story is held has changed from Tokyo to a nearby port city called Yokohama. And this time the game playing area will be three times bigger than the familiar district of Kamurocho that was featured in the last Yakuza game.
Though the change of city seams irrelevant compared to the change in the combat system. IT has changed to a menu-based approach from the Streets of Rage-style. This combat style may remind you a bit of Final Fantasy or Persona game series. This is a huge change because Yakuza game saries have always been JRPGs.
In Japan Ryu ga Gotoku 7 will be released on January 16, 2020 on PlayStation4. But North America and Europe won’t be kept long and can expect Yakuza 7 release early 2020. Though it will be playable at Tokyo Game Show that will happen next month.
Check out this game Mega Man Zero that will also be released in early 2020.
